When Can We Travel?

Updated: Feb 23, 2023

The question I get from my clients most often these days is – when can we travel? The truth is you can travel now. There are places you can go right now. Mexico, the Caribbean, and most of the United States are open and welcoming tourists. But many of my clients aren’t interested in those types of trips. They are asking when they will be allowed to go wherever they want! Europe, Asia, South America …the WORLD!! The bottom line is that nobody knows. Each country will make that decision based on so many factors including health, safety, politics and economics. How quickly vaccines roll out, their overall efficacy, infection and hospitalization rates will all be factors in a country’s decision to open their borders. So the bottom line is that nobody knows when you’ll be able to travel without restrictions. It’s important for travelers to know that, although some destinations are open, travel from the US is still not advised unless you are vaccinated. And while they have removed the “test before you travel” recommendation, they still recommend testing before after you return. And they urge people to remember that the pandemic isn’t over – so masks and distancing are still key. Bear in mind that a negative Covid test is required to return to the US – even if you have been vaccinated. Some countries are accepting US visitors and allowing them to forgo quarantine requirements if they are two weeks past their second dose (for Pfizer and Moderna) and their single dose (for Johnson and Johnson). That list as of March 26 includes Belize, Ecuador, Estonia, Iceland, Seychelles, and Slovenia. Many more will follow, but it’s important to check before planning your trip. Things change quickly and not all countries have been as quick at getting shots in arms. Here’s what I do know: travel WILL come back. And when it does, it’s going to be a tsunami of planning and booking. Why? Because travel takes you out of your daily routine and into new surroundings and experiences and this resets your body and mind. After a year of lock down, missed milestones, distancing and constant vigilance, we are all exhausted and we need an outlet. Even planning a trip can have a fantastic effect on the body. So now truly is the time to start planning. Make lists. Take notes. And when your dream destination opens, you will be ready to go!
